The end of the year can feel like a blur. Between wrapping up client work, prepping for holidays, and planning for next year, it’s easy to overlook your business finances. But a few intentional steps now can save you time, stress, and money. It will also set you up for a stronger year ahead.
1. Reconcile All Accounts
Make sure your bank accounts, credit cards, and payment platforms (like PayPal or Stripe) are fully reconciled. This helps ensure your records match your actual balances and makes tax season much smoother.
- Review your bookkeeping software or spreadsheets for missing or duplicate transactions
- Double-check that each transaction is categorized correctly
- Don’t forget to reconcile savings or reserve accounts too
2. Review Profit and Loss + Balance Sheet Reports
Take a fresh look at your financial reports. These tell the story of your business performance over the past year and can guide your decisions for the next one.
Look for:
- Revenue trends month by month
- Categories where you’re overspending
- Net profit and how it compares to your goals
- Changes in assets or liabilities
3. Gather Tax Documents
Start pulling together the paperwork you’ll need for tax time. The earlier you start, the less stressful it will be.
Gather:
- 1099s or W-9s (and send yours out if needed)
- Payroll summaries if you have a team
- Receipts for major purchases
- Mileage logs or home office expense details
- Estimated tax payments you’ve already made
4. Evaluate Your Pricing and Packages
Year-end is a great time to ask: Are your current rates and services still aligned with the value you deliver?
Consider:
- Raising prices for the new year
- Refining or streamlining your offers
- Creating new packages that reflect how your work has evolved
5. Set Financial Goals for Next Year
Look ahead. What do you want your revenue, expenses, and profit to look like next year?
Try this:
- Set a target income goal
- Break it down into monthly or quarterly milestones
- Map out how many clients, projects, or product sales you need to get there
- Create a simple budget to support your goals
6. Celebrate and Reflect
This is a step most people skip, but it’s one of the most powerful.
Take a moment to celebrate your progress. Reflect on what worked, what felt aligned, and what you want to do differently next year.
Ask yourself:
- What were your biggest wins this year?
- What challenged you?
- What do you want more of (or less of) next year?
You’ve come a long way. Don’t forget to honor that.
Make Year-End Simple and Intentional
You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Start with one or two steps from this checklist and build from there. A little financial clarity now goes a long way in the new year.
